A world-renowned rhino sanctuary, Hluhluwe Umfolozi is the home of the African elephant and 80 other mammal species. It was once the sacred hunting ground of the Zulu nation.

In 1895 Umfolozi and Hluhluwe became nature conservation areas. The parks were extended and today they are joined. The "Big 5" - lion, elephants, rhinos, leopards and buffaloes can be found here.

The park specialises in the conservation of the white rhino. Today 1600 live in an area of 880sq km toghether with 300 of the more dangerous black rhino.

Greater St. Lucia Wetlands Park

The Greater St. Lucia Wetlands Park is blessed with lakes, lagoons, swamps and an estuary. The rich waters are home to many species of fish, birds, over 800 hippos and 2500 crocodiles.

Zulu culture

The area has rich traditions that are steeped in wild game and war. You can get a glimpse into traditional Zulu life at the Dumazulu Cultural Village.
